What is GoodDollar?
GoodDollar is a crypto protocol that creates and hands out free G$ tokens every day to registered members, as a form of digital universal basic income (UBI). Its homepage calls it an open, decentralized UBI protocol used by over 640,000 people, and presents it as a way to direct modest financial assets to those who need them most while bringing the financially underserved into Web3.
G$ is a reserve-backed token. The homepage says the reserve holds USD stablecoins funded by donated yield from corporate supporters, and the docs say the reserve was first seeded by eToro, Celo and XDC. The token model has no pre-mint, no private sale and no founder allocation, and the whitepaper states that GoodDollar is not running an ICO: its budget comes from direct donations and the tokens are given away.
Around the token sits a small set of products: a wallet for signing up and claiming, GoodDapp for swaps, staking and bridging, GoodCollective for paying UBI to chosen members, and a dashboard. The protocol is governed by the GoodDAO.
How GoodDollar works
GoodDollar issues G$ against a reserve. The docs explain that new G$ are minted only when new funds enter the GoodDollar Reserve, following a price curve based on the Bancor formula, and that the rate at which money is created for UBI can change with economic conditions and is set through the GoodDAO. Members can also stake G$ to gain governance power and earn GOOD tokens.
The campaign is the daily UBI claim. A member first proves uniqueness to obtain a GoodDollar verified address, which the homepage says can be done in GoodWallet. From then on the member can claim G$ every day, either in GoodWallet or in other Web3 wallets connected to GoodDapp.
G$ can also be earned by selling goods and services to other members in G$, or bought: on Ethereum through the GoodReserve, and on Celo and Fuse through decentralized exchanges.
