DAT stands for digital asset treasury company: a publicly traded firm that keeps crypto such as BTC, ETH or SOL on its balance sheet as a central part of its strategy. Buyers get exposure through an ordinary brokerage account instead of holding coins themselves. DAT describes a business model, not a product, a token or an airdrop.

What does DAT mean in crypto?

In crypto, DAT is shorthand for a listed company whose main aim is to accumulate digital assets, and "DATs" is the plural for the whole group of firms that follow the model. The idea was pioneered in 2020 by Strategy, formerly known as MicroStrategy, which moved away from software to become a vehicle for buying and holding Bitcoin. By The Block's count, Strategy has since accumulated over 700,000 BTC.

The label says nothing about which coin a company holds. The Block's explainer on DATs counts more than 200 public companies using variations of the model, spread across a dozen different cryptoassets.

AirdropStop lists free token distributions, and a DAT is a different thing: a stock-market company rather than a reward program. If you came here from the airdrop side of crypto, the guide to crypto airdrops covers that topic.

How does a digital asset treasury company work?

A DAT raises money from investors, spends it on crypto and repeats the cycle for as long as the market lets it. Three funding routes recur: selling new shares, private deals with institutions, and borrowing.

MethodHow it raises moneyDetail
ATM (at-the-market equity program)Issues new shares and sells them on the marketThe most common route
PIPE (private investment in public equity)Offers shares to institutional investors at a discount, with an agreed lockupCan bring more dilution and selloffs when lockups expire
DebtBorrows to fund further crypto purchasesGives leveraged exposure

The ATM is the most common route. PIPEs tend to be used by newer or smaller DATs, and ATMs are generally preferred over them.

What are NAV and mNAV?

NAV (net asset value) is the value of a DAT's crypto per share, and mNAV is the share price expressed as a multiple of that figure. NAV comes from total assets minus liabilities, divided by the number of shares.

An mNAV above 1.0 means the stock trades at a premium to its holdings, and below 1.0 it trades at a discount. With a NAV of $10 and a market price of $18, the share sits at an 80% premium.

Which companies run a DAT?

Strategy is the original, and other firms have copied it with different coins. Mara Holdings has been cited as a BTC-based example and Forward Industries as a SOL holder, according to CoinDesk's newsletter on the topic.

Bitcoin dominates. Around 90% of DATs focus on BTC, several dozen hold over 6 million ETH, and almost 16 million SOL is held in DATs, per The Block.

Newer firms have moved to other assets, including XRP, DOGE, BNB, HYPE and ADA. Some take part in their network: Ethereum DATs stake ETH, PURR runs a Hyperliquid validator, and CYPH operates a mining operation. In early September 2026, The Block's weekly data newsletter put the combined market capitalization of DATs at about $340 billion, up 10% since mid-August.

How do DATs differ from ETFs?

A DAT is an actively managed company, while a spot ETF is a fund that holds the asset directly. A spot ETF tracks the asset's price.

A DAT instead aims to keep accumulating, so its shares can trade at a premium or a discount to the crypto it holds. Formation also differs: a US ETF must be approved by the SEC, while an already-listed company can convert. CoinDesk's piece on digital asset treasuries describes the DAT risk profile as closer to a leveraged stock than to an ETF.

What risks do DATs carry?

The risks published for DATs center on leverage and on the premium over NAV. The Block names a long stretch with the share price under NAV as the main worry, saying it might push some firms to fail and spread trouble to the wider market.

CoinDesk ties borrowing to the chance of forced liquidations if markets turn unstable.

Frequently asked questions

Why do investors buy DAT shares instead of crypto?

According to The Block, a DAT share lets a buyer get exposure through regular stock markets, with no personal wallet or exchange account needed to hold the coins. Many DATs also borrow to fund new purchases, so the exposure is leveraged, and downside moves can be amplified as well.

Do DATs earn income from the crypto they hold?

Some do. The Block's explainer says some DATs stake proof-of-stake assets such as ETH or SOL for yield, or deploy assets into DeFi protocols. A separate Block newsletter notes that Ethereum DATs stake ETH, PURR runs a Hyperliquid validator and CYPH operates a mining operation.

Are DATs regulated like funds?

CoinDesk says Strategy is not a '40 Act fund because BTC is not a security, and that the same reasoning may not hold for DATs holding other assets. How those other DATs are treated is therefore less clear than Strategy's position.

What happens when a DAT trades below its NAV?

Accumulation slows or stops, because new share sales no longer pay off. The Block says a DAT can then run a buyback programme, funded from cash reserves or by selling some of its crypto, aimed at bringing mNAV back above parity.
