What is Uniswap?
Uniswap is a crypto trading app where users swap one token for another straight from a connected wallet. Its homepage describes buying and selling crypto with zero app fees on more than 22 networks, including Ethereum, Unichain and Base. People can connect a wallet, use Uniswap Mobile, or create an account with a login.
Its swap screen asks the user to pick a token to sell and a token to buy, with a wallet connection as the entry point.
Uniswap also has a governance side. It runs a governance forum and points members to voting interfaces, including Snapshot for off-chain votes. The UNI token was handed to past users in an airdrop on September 1, 2020, and 60% of its genesis supply is allocated to Uniswap community members.
How Uniswap works
Uniswap works as a swap interface: a user connects a wallet, chooses the token to sell and the token to buy, and confirms the trade from that wallet. The homepage cites 22+ networks, including Ethereum, Unichain and Base, and states that the app itself charges no fees.
The UNI airdrop was tied to past use rather than to tasks or points. A snapshot was taken at 12:00 am UTC on September 1, 2020, and only wallets that had used Uniswap before it qualified. According to the governance forum post on the claim, 150,000,000 UNI (15% of supply) was open for immediate claiming by historical liquidity providers, users and SOCKS redeemers or holders.
Liquidity providers shared 49 million UNI, with rewards based on how much liquidity each provided over time since v1 launched, favouring early, low-liquidity periods. Separately, every address that had ever called the v1 or v2 Uniswap contracts could claim 400 UNI, including roughly 12,000 addresses whose only activity was failed transactions.
An eligible wallet saw a prompt in the Uniswap web app and claimed by approving a transaction. The homepage shows no rewards or points campaign running today.
The UNI airdrop
The campaign paid UNI, the token Uniswap distributed. Any address that had interacted with the v1 or v2 Uniswap contracts before the September 1, 2020 snapshot could claim 400 UNI, and historical liquidity providers shared 49 million UNI, part of the 150,000,000 UNI claimable at launch, under a per-second liquidity formula. Claims were made by connecting an eligible wallet to the Uniswap web app and approving a transaction. The campaign is ended.
Step by step: how to get the UNI airdrop
Kept for reference: this is how the campaign worked while it ran.
Stay safe: a real airdrop never asks for your seed phrase or private key. Use only the official links on this page, and treat any message that offers help with a claim as a scam.
Step 1: Check the snapshot rule
Eligibility depended on having used Uniswap before 12:00 am UTC on September 1, 2020. The governance forum post on the 400 UNI requirements sets out who qualified.
Step 2: Connect the wallet to the Uniswap app
The support center's claim article told eligible users to connect their wallet at app.uniswap.org.
Step 3: Look for the UNI prompt
A wallet that qualified showed a "UNI has arrived" popup in the web app. A wallet without the popup had not met the snapshot rule.
Step 4: Claim and approve the transaction
Selecting the claim button and approving the transaction sent the UNI to the wallet. The 2020 forum post advised claimers to set the right gas limit for the transaction.
