The Open Network airdrops FAQ
What is TON?
- TON, short for The Open Network, is a decentralized layer 1 blockchain that its website says is developed by Telegram and the open-source community. It uses proof-of-stake consensus, splits into shardchains automatically as load grows, and runs smart contracts on its own TON Virtual Machine. ton.org gives a block time of about 0.4 seconds and fixed fees that do not depend on network load.
Which wallet do I need for TON airdrops?
- A TON wallet. Telegram has a built-in, non-custodial Gram Wallet that ton.org says is integrated into the messenger, and mini apps connect to it through TON Connect. TON's docs also describe wallet.ton.org, a self-custodial web wallet that gives you a 24-word mnemonic: write it down offline, because anyone who has it can take control of the wallet. A legitimate airdrop never asks for it.
What is the TON coin, Gram, used for?
- Gram (GRAM) is the native coin of the TON blockchain and was also known as Toncoin. It pays fees for running smart contracts, storing their data and network traffic, and it is used in validation and voting. Inside Telegram it buys Telegram Stars, can prepay giveaways, and Telegram ad revenue can be paid out in it. It was first distributed through proof-of-work mining.
